The New Hampshire Motor Speedway, also known as The “Magic Mile,” located in Loudon, New Hampshire, is New England’s largest sporting venue. The track was designed and constructed without consulting any engineers and only used one surveyor whose main job was to plant stakes.
The New Hampshire Motor Speedway is a 1.058 oval mile which opened in July, 1990 hosting a Nationwide race which was won by Tommy Ellis. The Sprint Cup Series came to Loudon in 1993 with an early summer race and then a second date was added in 2004 when the North Wilkesboro track was sold at an estate sale. The September race that is now hosted by The New Hampshire Motor Speedway is the first race of 10 that begin the “Chase for the Championship”.
Unfortunately in 2000, the New Hampshire Motor Speedway was the site of two fatal crashes that took the lives of two young drivers, Adam Petty and Kenny Irwin, Jr. For safety reasons, track owners decided to run races with restrictor plates on their return trip in September. This was and still is the only wire to wire race which was very uneventful which had no lead changes and was won by Jeff Burton. Needless to say, restrictor plates were removed and instead the track made other safety changes.
In November, 2007 the New Hampshire Motor Speedway, was purchased for $340 million by Bruton Smith, owner of Speedway Motorsports, Inc. The name of the track will be officially changed to New Hampshire Motor Speedway for the 2008 season and will keep two Nascar dates annually.
